Cleaning a Velvet Drape Set

If you have purchased a velvet drape set, you have purchased an item designed to add a sense of regality to a room. A velvet drape set can do wonders to bring out a regal quality in a living room, dining room, bedroom, den, or any place one could think of possibly hanging the drapes. If you've spent a great deal on your velvet drape set, you, no doubt, will want to clean them properly if you happen to stain them. This can sometimes happen over time, as dust and dirt collects; after an accident; after a drink spill; or after a child decides to use them as a coloring book.
So what do you do if your velvet drape set looks irreparably stained? You might first want to use a dry carpet or drape cleaning product to remove the stain in question. In many cases, this will be sufficient. But if your drapes are also dust-covered and musty, they may be due for a better cleaning.
Velvet clothing is cleaned by dry cleaning. A velvet smoking jacket is not thrown in a washing machine. Now, many dry cleaning establishments may not accept a drape set (although there are many that will) so it is up to the owner of the drape set to do the cleaning. So, how should they clean it?
Well, first off, do not use water. Water will ruin velvet’s luster. Steam is usually the preferred method. A combination of steam and ammonia has be recommended by some. But, the best method would be to simply purchase a can of velvet cleaner. Yes, there is such a product. Play it smart, don’t try to be creative in inventing a new way to clean (ruin) a velvet drape set!
