The Mystique of the Velvet Thong

Those are the legendary 1960’s alternative music band, The Velvet Underground's lyrics to the song “Femme Fatale.” Now, those lyrics are hardly subtle. What they are describing in that song is one tough, seductive, dominant female.

A type of femme fatale that might have worn a velvet thong. The velvet thong has ridden the growing popularity of thong underwear that has come in vogue in recent years. While it would seem counter-intuitive to use a bulky material like velvet on a thong, which is specifically designed not to show through thin clothing, they are still quite popular, especially in use for lingerie.

Velvet is a material that is known for its celebrity status and its association with royalty, so it is no surprise that velvet thong women’s underwear also gains the regal reputation the fabric provides. And regality is not an easy mantle to lay claim to. It is only that special product that can capture the image of a certain mystique.

Perhaps the regality of a velvet thong adds to creating an attitude (or at least the perception of attitude) in the wearer. In certainly can lay claim to the mantle of femme fatale. For some reason, it would be hard to buy cotton as the preferred fabric of a femme fatale. Silk, maybe, but cotton, no way. Velvet? Oh, yes, definitely. A velvet thong can credibly claim an association with the femme fatale mystique that has been left indelible in our minds from the image projected upon us in popular culture. And, The Velvet Underground capture that mystique in a more earthly manner in their song.

So, to finish out the other half of that Velvet Underground song: “'cause everybody knows (she's a femme fatale), The things she does to please (she's a femme fatale), See the way she walks, Hear the way she talks, You're written in her book.”
