Velvet Clothing Throughout History
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios
When people think of something popular, they are usually thinking of something that is of fleeting popularity. That is, it has a limited shelf life and has a peak of popularity followed by a decline and, in some cases, it moves from a height of popularity to extinct.
Styles of clothes can fall into this category. Bellbottoms were widely popular in the 1970’s and became extinct circa 1981 and then reappeared briefly in the late 1990’s. (Since we are talking about something that is not alive-i.e. not a plant or animal-an unloving entity can return from a supposed extinction). Now, if something has endured for an extended period of time uninterrupted, then that is a supreme testament to popularity.
And nothing can lay claim to a similar popularity as that of velvet clothing.
How popular is velvet clothing? Well, it has been around a long, long time. Velvet was worn by the Egyptians around 2000 Years B.C. Yes, this clothing has been around for 4,000 years. That’s slightly more impressive than the bellbottom fad, eh?
4,000 years ago, velvet was used as the special apparel for Egyptian Pharaohs. However, what we know as modern velvet draws its lineage from the velvet clothing of the middle ages. (Egyptian velvet clothing was designed in a manner much more closer to a robe than a jacket.) Medieval nobles and royalty used velvet as the preferred apparel of the ruling class. So, in a sense, those who wear velvet clothing today can claim a sense of kinship to kings and queens!
Velvet has endured for an incredible amount of time and it has always been associated with regality. So, it is no surprise it is still considered a high quality clothing fabric to this day that provides a sense of majestic allure to one who wears it. In that regard, it is no surprise that velvet still appears on shelves in top stores all aver the world.
